Taylor Sanchez ‘21
My name is Taylor Sanchez and I am a first generation college student. I’m a senior with a double major in Exercise Science and Psychology and currently applying to Occupational Therapy MS Programs. I was lucky enough to be a part of the TRIO summer program before the first semester of my freshman year and get a good understanding of the demands of college life. The initial challenges I faced as a first-gen college student were primarily the socio-economic barriers. While I was blessed to be given some scholarships, there was an overwhelming feeling of financial confusion. After the summer program, I felt more comfortable and confident in taking on the new role as a college student.
In the beginning of my sophomore year, I became a research assistant to a professor (Dr. Hanson) in the Psychology department, in which I was able to learn more about the different Psychology disciplines. After working with Dr. Hanson, I was able to learn more than Psychology. She became my mentor and friend and since then has guided me through different obstacles I have faced. Through this relationship, I am currently working on publishing research with her. Not only was I given an opportunity to publish in my Psychology discipline, but I am also working with Dr. Reiner from the Exercise Science Department, to publish a journal article in NSCA Coach.
