SNAP and WIC in New Jersey
What is SNAP?
New Jersey Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, NJ SNAP, formally known as Food Stamps, provides assistance to low-income families to buy groceries. SNAP is accepted in most retail stores and farmer’s markets. https://www.nj.gov/humanservices/njsnap/index.shtml
NJ SNAP cannot be used to buy
- Alcohol, tobacco, and cigarettes
- Non-food items (pet food, toilet paper, diapers, soap, etc.)
- Vitamins and medicine
- Hot and prepared food meals
College students may be eligible for SNAP if they are enrolled at least half time in an institution of higher education and are eligible to participate in a state or federally financed work-study program or have an Expected Family Contribution of $0 as determined by the Higher Education Act. What is WIC?
WIC, or the New Jersey Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women Infants, and Children, gives assistance to low-income women, infants, and toddlers up to the age of five by providing education on healthy eating, referrals to health care, and nutritious food. https://www.nj.gov/health/fhs/wic/participants/apply-wic/
Who is Eligible to Apply for and Receive WIC Benefits?
- Pregnant women
- Women who have delivered a child within the last six months
- Breastfeeding women who have delivered a child within the last year
- Infants and children under five years old
To be eligible, people in these categories must:
- Have a medical condition or limited access to nutrition that places their health at risk
- Live in New Jersey and provide proof of residency
- Meet income guidelines
