Computer Hygiene

Consider this: Before students attend school they must be immunized against several diseases that they could otherwise contract from other students. Likewise, before computers are connected to a network they must be immunized against computer viruses, spyware, and adware that can infect other computers.

University Computers

Desktop computers are configured by the Information Technology Services (ITS) Department to be protected against computer viruses, spyware, and adware. It’s strongly advised to avoid downloading inoffensive looking programs from the internet. Many of these programs are bundled with computer viruses, spyware, and/or malware. Please be aware that if your computer becomes infected, ITS will have to quarantine and service the desktop computer. You may be left with out a computer for a few days as we attempt to disinfect it.

Laptops are also configured by the ITS department to be protected against computer viruses, spyware, and adware. Most of our laptops are configured to automatically download and install Microsoft updates and Antivirus updates, however some are not. In such case, users are vested with the responsibility to maintain their laptop up-to-date.

• To update Sophos Antiviurs, right-click the blue shield in the Windows notification area and select “Update now.”
• To install Microsoft Windows updates, start Internet Explorer and select “Windows Update” in the “Tools” menu.

Personal Computers

Personal computers, physically or wirelessly connected to our network, including those in the resident halls must also be protected. Our network is continually monitored for usage abuse. We hold the right to deny network access to a computer that is adversely affecting our network’s performance. Access will be granted only after the Network Services Department verifies it’s disinfected. Below are some safe practices for a better computing experience:

• Always keep your virus protection software updated. Most new computers are bundled with a trial subscription to an antivirus program. After the trial expiration, consider paying for the subscription extension. Alternatively, there are a few antivirus programs available online for free.
• Always keep Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office updated. See knowledge base article: 311047 (How to keep your Windows computer up-to-date).
• Check your computer weekly for viruses, spyware, and adware.
