Four Elected to Serve On Saint Peter’s College Board of Regents

June 30, 2003– Jersey City, NJ– Four area residents, including three graduates, have been elected to serve three-year terms on the Saint Peter’s College Board of Regents. The announcement was made today by Saint Peter’s College President Father James N. Loughran, S.J. Michael Kahrer (Cranford, NJ), Christopher Lowney (Riverdale, NY), Richard O’Brien (Pompton Plains, NJ)and Roberto Santos (West Orange, NJ)will begin their terms on July 1. The Board of Regents primary responsibility is to provide the College with leadership in several areas including fund raising, management, business operations, communications, marketing, investing, community service and other areas where they have personal expertise. The Board of Regents, which consists of 64 members, also runs the College’s annual Business Symposium, which will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2003at the Hyatt Regency on the ersey City waterfront. The symposium, entering its 32nd year, is the oldest business meeting of its kind in New Jersey. “The College administration relies on the Board of Regents for counsel in many areas,” Father Loughran said. “The four new members of the Board have diverse interests and areas of expertise that the College can call upon. They are dedicated to the College and recognize the value of the affordable, Jesuit liberal arts education we provide.” Below are biographies of the new members of the Saint Peter’s College Board of Regents: Michael Kahrer Kahrer, a 1979 graduate of Saint Peter’s College, is currently the Vice President, Human Resources at Organon Pharmaceuticals Inc. He has been with the Roseland-based pharmaceutical company since 1989. Prior to joining Organon, Kahrer held positions at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of NJ, City of Jersey City and the American Cancer Society. Kahrer has been active in Saint Peter’s alumni activities for many years and served on the College’s Alumni Board as Secretary and Vice President. He is also active in the Knights of Columbus and volunteers at St. Michael’s School and Church in Cranford (NJ). Kahrer, who majored in Business Management at Saint Peter’s, earned a Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management from Upsala College in 1993. He currently resides in Cranford with his wife Lorraine and children, Michael and Alexandra. Christopher R. Lowney Lowney is a former Managing Director of J.P. Morgan & Co. who held senior positions inNew York, Tokyo, Singapore and London. He currently serves part-time as Special Assistant to the President of the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB), and travels in the developing world to help launch CMMB’s initiatives targeted at preventing mother-to-child transmissions of HIV/AIDS. He is also a published author of “Heroic Leadership: Best Practices from a 450-Year-Old Company that Changed the World,” and is currently working on another book about medieval Spain. Prior to joining J.P. Morgan in 1983, Lowney spent seven years as a Jesuit seminarian and taught and studied at Jesuit institutions in the United States and Puerto Rico. His undergraduate and graduate degrees both came from Fordham University. He currently resides in Riverdale, NY. Richard O’Brien O’Brien, a 1960 graduate of Saint Peter’s College, currently serves as Managing Director, Human Resources at the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation inManhattan, the nation’s largest stock clearinghouse, where he has worked for 21 years. His responsibilities include developing strategies and programs that have facilitated mergers, recruitment of Senior Management as well as developing Executive Compensation and Leadership Programs. O’Brien also serves as a board member and Vice Chair of the American Foundation for the Blind. He will participate in the Regents Mentoring Program, a program that allows alumni to assist current Saint Peter’s students in career planning. Following graduation from Saint Peter’s, O’Brien served as a Lieutenant in the Infantry and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. Following his military service he earned an MBA from Pace University. He is also a Certified Financial Planner. The father of three grown daughters, O’Brien and his wife Pat reside in Pompton Plains, NJ. Roberto Santos Santos, a 1991 graduate of Saint Peter’s College, is currently a Director at Credit Suisse First Boston in Manhattan. His appointment to the Board of Regents solidifies a relationship he has had with the College community since graduation. He has participated in the College’s Executive Scholars Seminar and is a former member of the Alumni Board. Santos will be actively involved in the Regents Mentoring Program with the goal of working closely with Career Services and Experiential Learning to identify internship positions for current students. He resides in West Orange with his wife Elizabeth, also a 1991 Saint Peter’s graduate.
