Student Group Launches Fundraising Effort to Purchase New Peacock Costume September 17, 2003– Jersey City, NJ– Saint Peter’s College unveiled its new Peacock today with an on-campus ceremony on the College’s Quad. The Peacock, along with several accompanying marks and word types, will provide an updated signature look and feel. Saint Peter’s is the only school in the NCAA’s Division I to have the Peacock nickname. The College’s women’s athletic teams are known as the Peahens, the female of the species. The new symbol was created during a nine-month process by nationally recognized Phoenix Design Works of New York City to apply to all forms of media and apparel. The College will work with the Holland, MI based Licensing Resource Group to protect the new marks, along with the College’s other trademarks, and generate revenue through licensing opportunities. The College’s Student Government also launched an on-campus fund-raising drive to purchase a new Peacock costume. Students donated money today for an opportunity to throw a pie in the face on several faculty members, administrators and staff. A campus committee of students and administrators worked with Phoenix Design Works to develop a Peacock that was “animated while representing the true look of a Peacock.” Several aspects of the final design make reference to the College’s history. The colors include the royal blue that has become synonymous with Saint Peter’s. Green was included as an accent color to represent the previous use of teal as “Peacock Blue” by the College community even though it never caught on as an “official” color. A second accent color – black – was added due to its continued popularity with students. The shield in the mascot symbol is taken directly from the College’s official seal. Saint Peter’s College has been known as the Peacocks since 1930 when it re-opened following World War I. The Peacock was chosen because it is a religious symbol representing the resurrection and because the College’sJersey Citylocation was called by the Dutch settlers as theLandofPavonia(Land of the Peacock). The committee which selected the Peacock consisted of members from the College’s Student Affairs, Finance, Athletic, Alumni, Academic Affairs and Marketing and College Communications departments, along with the College Store. A student committee consisting of members from the Athletic Department, The Pauw Wow school paper and Student Government narrowed the choices from three to one. The new mark will be used immediately the College’s 20 Division I athletic teams and in on-campus sales through the College Store.
