Jersey City, NJ (February 11, 2005) — Jane Holl Lute, the assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping operations at the United Nations (UN), will provide an overview of the global agency’s peacekeeping roles and effectiveness as part of the Guarini Center Lecture Series at Saint Peter’s College on Wednesday, February 16 at 10 a.m. in the Pavonia Room on campus.
“Ms. Lute’s background in the military and her current role at the UN bring a dual perspective on the role of international peacekeeping missions in a world that is increasing interdependent,” said Dr. Kenneth Mitchell, Saint Peter’s College political science professor and chair of the lecture series. “We look forward to Ms. Lute’s insights on how the UN can work to prevent and to contain conflicts.”
Ms. Lute has overall responsibility for the personnel, finance and logistical support necessary for the UN’s peace operations throughout the world. Previously, Ms. Lute was the executive vice president and chief operating officer of the United Nations Foundation and Better World Fund. She was the executive director of the Carnegie Commission on Preventing Deadly Conflict from 1994-1999. As a career officer in the United States Army, Ms. Lute held command, served in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Storm, taught at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served in Europe. She was the director for European affairs on the national security council staff at the White House under both Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton from 1991-1994 before retiring from the military. She earned her Ph.D in political science from Stanford University and J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
Established in 1994 by former New Jersey Congressman Frank Guarini, the Guarini Center aims to provide a non-partisan forum for discussion and analysis of key public policy issues and to encourage careers in public service among today’s students. Members of the general public are invited to attend the talk. The lecture begins at 10 a.m. and includes a question and answer session after Ms. Lute’s general remarks.
