Peacocks Fall Sports Teams Ready for Action

Jersey City, NJ (August 22, 2005) It won’t yet be Labor Day 2005 and four Saint Peter’s College teams will already be in action, as volleyball and women’s soccer open on Saturday, August 27, followed quickly by men’s soccer on September 2 and football a day later, on September 3. This year’s first home contest falls on August 27, as women’s soccer entertains Quinnipiac at 1 pm at Joseph J. Jaroschak Field. That game will mark the debut of new head coach Shawn Tarquinio. On the same day, another new coach, Mike Massone, will lead Peahen volleyball in a tournament in Washington, DC. The home season opens on Labor Day at 5 pm against Delaware State.

Men’s soccer heads to the University of Connecticut, where the Peacocks will play in a tournament on September 2 and 4. The opening-round opponent is host UConn, the preseason favorite in the Big East and a three-time past national champion. Two days later, the Peacocks will take on Brown. Saint Peter’s scored an upset victory in the first round of the NCAA Division I postseason tournament against Brown in 2003. The soccer Peacocks, who have emerged as a conference and regional contender, are taking on a top-flight schedule of opponents in 2005. The home opener is September 7 at 4 pm against 2004 NCAA Tournament qualifier Hofstra. Football, with preseason All-America tailback Sean Mayers, is in its first full season under second-year head coach Chris Taylor.

The Peacocks open on Saturday, September 3, at 7 pm against Western Connecticut at Cochrane Stadium. Looking beyond the fall, all of college basketball will have an eye on Saint Peter’s this year, as two-time men’s basketball national scoring champion Keydren Clark plays his senior season with the Peacocks. Clark, who is one of just eight repeat national scoring champions, is in position to join all-time greats Oscar Robertson and Pete Maravich as the only men to lead the nation in scoring three times.
