JERSEY CITY (September 15, 2005) — Doctor Allan S. Stewart ’91, a cardiac surgeon who was part of the medical team that performed open heart surgery on former President Bill Clinton, will speak at Saint Peter’s College on Monday, September 19 th at noon in Gannon Hall as part of the Distinguished Speakers in Science Lecture Series. “We are pleased to have Dr. Stewart discuss the path that led him to pursue a career in medicine and to speak to our students about the challenges and rewards in the field from his personal experiences,” said Dr. Leonard Sciorra, the Rev. Joseph E. Schuh, S.J., Professor of Health and Natural Sciences at Saint Peter’s College.
After receiving his Bachelors of Science degree from Saint Peter’s in 1991, Dr. Stewart earned his MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He served his internship and residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania . Dr. Stewart took on the position of Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery/Department of Physiology at the University of Pennsylvania , School of Medicine from 1998 to 2000. From 2002-2004, he was the resident of Cardiothoracic Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.
Dr. Stewart currently serves as the Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Assistant Attending Surgeon at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, and Director of Aortic Surgery Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center. Certified by the American Board of Surgery, Dr. Stewart has received many professional honors including the C. Walton Lillie Young Investigator Award from the American Association of Thoracic Surgery. He is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Heart Association, and New York Society of Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Stewart has published numerous articles in medical journals and his work has been cited in several publications.
