NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED – DATE TBA Jersey City (December 1, 2005) — Steve Orlins, the President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Committee on United States-China Relations, will speak on Wednesday, December 7 at 11:00 am in Pope Lecture Hall as part of the Guarini Center Lecture Series at Saint Peter’s College.
“China’s emerging growth as a global power both economically and politically will continue to have a major impact on international relations in a world that is increasingly interdependent,” said Dr. Ken Mitchell, a political science professor at Saint Peter’s College and executive director of the Guarini Center. Mr. Orlins has played a major role in relations between the United States and China in both the diplomatic and corporate arenas for more than 30 years.
As an attorney in the State Department, he was involved in the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He has served as a Managing Director of Carlyle Asia and President of Lehman Brother Asia. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and lectures frequently on China. A member of the Harvard Asia Center Advisory Board, Orlins speaks Mandarin Chinese and is a graduate of Harvard Law School and Harvard College. The National Committee is a nonprofit educational organization that encourages understanding of China and the United States among citizens of both countries. The Committee focuses its exchanges, educational and policy activities on international affairs, economic development and management, governance and legal affairs, education administration and health, environment and other global issues as they relate to US activities concerned with China, Hong Kong SAR and Taiwan.
Established in 1994 by former New Jersey Congressman Frank Guarini, the Guarini Center aims to provide a non-partisan forum for discussion and analysis of key public policy issues and to encourage careers in public service among today’s students. Members of the general public are invited to attend Mr. Orlins’ talk. The lecture begins at 11 a.m. and includes a question and answer session.
Saint Peter’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey. Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in Jersey City. The College has a branch campus for adults in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and also offers courses at various corporate sites at the Jersey City waterfront and in South Amboy, NJ.
