The Saint Peter’s College Office for Community Service and Service Learning (CSSL) has several service opportunities and events scheduled for the 2006 fall semester.
Saint Peter’s College students typically contribute more than 16,000 hours of service to various community and non-profit organizations during the academic year. CSSL provide students with the opportunity to commit to one organization throughout the academic year or to choose from select events and projects.
Two of the most popular community service projects are the America Reads Program and the Loyola Volunteer Program. America Reads is a federal initiative that sponsors college students to serve as reading tutors for at-risk children in the local community. The program aims to have every child read on grade level by the third grade. Saint Peter’s America Reads tutors serve at least two hours a week at local grammar schools, working individually with children in reading and language arts under the supervision of a teacher. Students joining Loyola Volunteers agree to serve two hours per week for a semester at a local nonprofit agency or to work on various projects during the semester for a minimum of 30 hours. Students volunteer at organizations such as Square Meal Soup Kitchen, Community Food Bank, Jersey CityMedicalCenter, Saint Clare’s Home for Children with AIDS, Saint Lucy’s Shelter System, Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless, Boys and Girls Club, ESL Literacy Volunteers JC Public Library and Project Home. Annually, more than 700 student volunteers participate in more than 50 projects in Jersey City.
CSSL events scheduled for the fall semester include:
- Blood Drive on October 4 in Roy Irving from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.;
- Avon Walk for Breast Cancer on October 7 and 8;
- Making Strides against Breast Cancer on October 15;
- Winter Coat Drive from October 16 to November 15;
- Halloween Themed Juvenile Diabetes Walk on October 28;
- Food Drive Week from November 6 to 10;
- Sleep Out for Hunger and Homelessness on November 21;
- Angel Giving Tree with New Jersey Fire Department from November 27 to December 8;
- Blood Drive on December 6 in Roy Irving from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
