Passing of SPC Professor John Benson ’53, Ph.D.

Jersey City – Dr. John Benson ‘53, who taught at Saint Peter’s College for nearly 40 years, passed away on Sunday, January 7, 2007.  He was 76.  Dr. Benson began his teaching career at Saint Peter’s College in 1956 and served as Chairman of the Modern and Classical Languages & Literatures Department for several years. 
 
Dr. Benson earned his degree, magna cum laude, from Saint Peter’s College and received a Fulbright Fellowship for study in Italy.  He taught many languages, including Latin and Greek at Saint Peter’s and was well-known for incorporating the arts into the classroom through visits to museums, the theater and lectures.
 
The wake will take place on Thursday, January 11, 2007 at Caggiano Funeral Home (973-744-6667) 62 Grove Street in Montclair, NJ from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral will take place on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at Saint Cassian’s Church in Upper Montclair, NJ. Please call Saint Cassian’s at 973-744-2850 for the time of the Mass.
