Jersey City, N.J. (November 17, 2009) – The Saint Peter’s College Peacocks (1-1) had no trouble with the early wake up call this morning as they defeated the Monmouth University Hawks (1-2), 58-34 at the Yanitelli Center. This morning’s game tipped off at 6: 00 a.m. as part of ESPN’s 24 Hours of College Basketball Marathon. Wesley Jenkins led a balanced Peacock attack with 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
“This was a great day for our team and our program,” said Head Coach John Dunne. “The support and effort of the entire College had an impact on this morning’s game and we thank everyone for their efforts. Our team played great this morning and it was big to get our first win after the tough loss on Friday night.”
The first 10 minutes of the game was a tight affair and neither team could find any offense. Saint Peter’s trailed 7-6 at the 14:23 mark, but then went on a 16-2 run to take a 22-9 lead with 6:09 to play in the first and never looked back. Monmouth closed the gap to 10 points at 26-16 with 2:58 to play, but the Peacocks took a 27-16 lead into the break. (more)
