Jersey City, N.J. – In the wake of historic devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy, Saint Peter’s University has announced the Hurricane Heroes Scholarship Program, a program designed to award 15 qualified applicants for fall 2013 admission with a scholarship in appreciation for the acts of volunteerism and service they provided to individuals and communities impacted by the hurricane.
“For more than 140 years, Saint Peter’s has been home to a remarkably caring and service-oriented community, rooted in the Jesuit principle of promoting justice at every turn,” said Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s University. “Hurricane Sandy revealed the selfless side of so many Americans, as they tirelessly worked to help their neighbors in need. Our students were among these heroes, working late into the night collecting food and supplies and making care packages for those displaced. We have developed this scholarship program because we are incredibly proud of our students and want to add more individuals like them to our community.”
Fifteen academically qualified applicants will be chosen by the Committee on Admissions for an award of $20,000 that will be used toward tuition and housing. To be considered, applicants must submit a 500-word essay describing in detail the acts of selflessness and service they provided to those impacted by Hurricane Sandy. To be eligible, a student must attend Saint Peter’s University in the fall of 2013 and live on campus. Submissions must be sent to admissions@saintpeters.edu by January 13, 2013.
Saint Peter’s University expresses deep concern for all of the victims of Hurricane Sandy and is making every effort to support students who have been devastated by the storm. The Saint Peter’s community is providing temporary housing for commuter students when possible and counseling and health services as needed. Current students are also engaging in volunteer programs and efforts to provide Hurricane Sandy relief, including food and clothing drives and helping to clean up the debris.
Saint Peter’s University, inspired by its Jesuit, Catholic identity, commitment to individual attention and grounding in the liberal arts, educates a diverse community of learners in undergraduate, graduate and professional programs to excel intellectually, lead ethically, serve compassionately and promote justice in our ever-changing urban and global environment.
