Cardinal Tobin to Celebrate Mass at St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s University Church

Jersey City, N.J. – February 15, 2018 – Saint Peter’s University today announced that Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., archbishop of Newark, will celebrate Mass for the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter the Apostle on Thursday, February 22 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s University Church, which is located at 800 Bergen Avenue in Jersey City. This is the first Mass that Cardinal Tobin will celebrate for the Saint Peter’s community specifically and it will mark a significant moment in the history of the University.

Cardinal Tobin was selected by Pope Francis in January 2017 to lead the Archdiocese of Newark, one of the largest archdioceses in terms of population in the United States. He is the first Cardinal to serve the diocese and in this role he acts as an advisor to the Pope.

Cardinal Tobin’s visit comes at a unique time, as Saint Peter’s is currently participating in a Mission Examen process mandated by the Superior General of the Jesuits in Rome and the Holy See’s Congregation for Catholic Education. The process seeks to determine whether Jesuit colleges and universities are dedicated to maintaining their Jesuit and Catholic identities and how that identity can be bolstered. This celebration will serve as a hallmark of the University’s Mission Examen journey.

“We have received an unexpected and wonderful gift with Cardinal Tobin’s visit to our community during our Examen year,” said Rev. Rocco Danzi, S.J., vice president for mission and ministry at Saint Peter’s University. “Cardinal Tobin is very much in the spirit of Pope Francis, especially in his attempts to defend immigrants, promotion of interreligious and ecumenical dialogue and support for pathways to equality in the Catholic Church. In many ways, his goals echo the values of our students as well as Saint Peter’s mission.”
