Jersey City, N.J. – October 9, 2020 – Saint Peter’s is proud to announce the launch of a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning. The program was developed in response to the high demand for expertise in AI and machine learning languages in a variety of fields including healthcare, banking, finance, research, gaming and more.
“The Department of Computer and Information Sciences at Saint Peter’s has been teaching AI for decades,” said Alberto LaCava, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. “We have in-house experts in the AI and machine learning disciplines and we have been investing in AI technology and infrastructure. We look forward to maximizing our latest tools and faculty expertise as we introduce the new courses in this program.”
In addition to the new concentration, the University has also constructed an Artificial Intelligence Lab on campus, which houses high-speed computers designed to accommodate machine learning software. The construction of the lab was funded through SURGE (STEM Undergraduate Retention Graduation and Empowerment), a project that was awarded a historic five-year grant of more than $3.8 million by the U.S. Department of Education through the Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Stem Program. Marcia Mitchell, Ph.D. ’87, ’90, associate professor of computer and information sciences, will serve as the lead instructor in the program. Her dissertation was in artificial intelligence and she conducts research in artificial intelligence and neuroscience.
According to the job site Indeed, a machine learning engineer is the best job of 2019 due to the growth in the field and its average base salary. There is not only a strong demand for artificial intelligence and machine learning experts, but also a short supply of industry experts. The University expects this new program to help meet this need.
