As a proud Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), Saint Peter’s University takes this year’s National Hispanic Heritage Month as a special opportunity to honor the richness and vibrancy of its community. From September 15 through October 15, the University will celebrate the contributions of Hispanic Americans and reflect on Saint Peter’s ongoing dedication to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment. This year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” resonates with the University’s mission to empower the next generation of leaders and innovators.
A Legacy of Inclusion: Celebrating 25 Years as a HSI
Last year, Saint Peter’s marked its 25th anniversary as a HSI, a significant milestone in the University’s history. As a HSI, Saint Peter’s serves a student body that is more than 25 percent Hispanic, a reflection of its ongoing commitment to supporting the fastest-growing demographic in higher education.
Hubert Benitez, D.D.S., Ph.D., the first Hispanic president of Saint Peter’s, expressed his pride in leading a University that has long embraced its Hispanic identity. “As we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, we are reminded that our students are poised to be the leaders and innovators of tomorrow,” said Dr. Benitez. “This is a time to recognize the rich cultural diversity within our University and to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our Hispanic students, faculty and alumni.”
Paving the Way for Latino Student Success
In line with its mission to support the success of Hispanic students, Saint Peter’s University has formally affiliated with Excelencia in Education, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to accelerating Latino student success in higher education. As part of this affiliation, President Benitez has joined the Presidents for Latino Student Success (P4LSS) national network, which consists of university leaders committed to fostering campus environments where Latino students, and all students, can thrive.
Student Voices: Celebrating the Hispanic Experience at Saint Peter’s
The University’s commitment to its Hispanic community can be seen through the stories of its students, who have found a welcoming and supportive environment at Saint Peter’s.
Katherine Pena Sanchez ’25, a biology major, shared how Saint Peter’s helped her thrive both academically and personally. “At Saint Peter’s, I’ve found a community where I know I can always rely on others. The connections I’ve made have supported me throughout my time here, and the faculty’s commitment to diversity and inclusion has been truly inspiring.”
Similarly, Benjamin Miranda-Ruiz ’27, a computer science major, expressed his gratitude for the welcoming atmosphere. “From the moment I first stepped onto campus, I knew that choosing Saint Peter’s was a decision I’d never regret. The support I’ve received from my classmates and the community has made me feel at home.”
Sociology major, Amberlyn Cruz Reyes ’27, also shared her experience of feeling included during Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations. She highlighted an event dedicated to “Dia de los Muertos,” where students of all backgrounds came together to learn about the traditions and customs of this significant celebration. “The event was not only educational but also inclusive, allowing students to share their own experiences and participate in creative activities.”
Looking Ahead: A Call to Action
As Saint Peter’s University continues its celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to take part in the various events and activities on campus and online. From sharing stories on social media to attending on-campus gatherings, the university community is invited to honor Hispanic heritage and recognize the vital role it plays in shaping the future of Saint Peter’s.
