Saint Peter’s College Hosts 34th Annual Business Symposium

Jersey City (November 3, 2005) — Saint Peter’s College will host its 34 th Annual Business Symposium on Tuesday, November 15 th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency in Jersey City . The theme of this year’s conference is Business, Government and the Media – Can They Play Fairly? Award-winning journalist and author Pete Hamill will deliver the luncheon keynote address. Three panel members, Susan Lisovicz with CNN, Congressman Bob Menendez and Thomas D. Carver, executive director of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, will deliver remarks during the morning session. “This event provides a forum for members of the private and public sectors to hear directly from decision-makers about their views on the relationship and interaction among key leaders in the public sector, the corporate side and in the media,” said Bob Goldstein ‘60, co-chair of the event and member of the Saint Peter’s College Board of Regents.

Pete Hamill’s career in journalism began in 1960 when he went to work as a reporter for the New York Post. During a career that has spanned more than four decades, the Brooklyn native has been an award-winning columnist for The New York Post, The Daily News, and New York Newsday. He has served as editor-in-chief of both the New York Post and the New York Daily News. In addition, Hamill has published nine novels, including Downtown: My Manhattan in 2004. After leaving school at 16 to work in the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a sheet metal worker, Hamill served in the United States Navy.

Susan Lisovicz is a correspondent for CNN Business News and the co-host of CNN’s weekend business program In the Money. She reports from the New York Stock Exchange and has also worked as an anchor for CNN Headline News. Lisovicz is a former president of the New York Financial Writers’ Association. She studied at Trinity and All Saints College in England and earned a degree in communication from William Paterson University , where she received the President’s Medal in 1999.

Congressman Bob Menendez ‘76 represents New Jersey ‘s 13th District. The seventh-term Congressman is the Chairman of the Democratic Caucus and the highest ranking Hispanic in Congressional history. He is the first Democratic House Member from New Jersey elected to a leadership post. Congressman Menendez formerly served as a New Jersey State Assemblyman and State Senator before winning election to the House of Representatives. He earned his B.A. from St. Peter’s College and a law degree from Rutgers University .

Thomas D. Carver ’58 is the executive director of the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority. He previously served as New Jersey ’s Commissioner of Department of Labor and Workforce Development. He was the first President of the New Jersey Aviation Association and founded The Carver Group, a consulting firm with an emphasis in equal opportunity employment and minority entrepreneurship. Carver also served as President of the Casino Association of New Jersey and with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for more than 20 years. He is a graduate of Saint Peter’s College, New York Law School , and attended the New York University Graduate School of Law. He is a member of the Saint Peter’s College Board of Regents.
