Peacock’s Mayers sets MAAC long jump record

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ (May 7 and 8)–Saint Peter’s College junior Sean Mayers set a new Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship record in the men’s long jump at 7.37 meters, in the 2005 MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet held at Rider University. Mayers’ 7.37-meter jump broke the old championship mark of 7.14 meters, set in 2004 by Manhattan’s Magnus Ahlen. Mayers’ jump is also a new school outdoor record, surpassing the 22-feet, 7-inches set by Stephen Hankins in 2001. Mayers’ 2005 MAAC championship jump converts to a little more than 24-feet, 2-inches. Mayers also placed third in the men’s 100-meter dash with a time of 10.87 seconds, which matched the previous MAAC championship record, set in 2003 by Rider’s Jamaal Harris.

This year, Harris (10.59) and teammate David Payne (10.69) broke the old record, while Mayers matched it. The previous weekend, Mayers was a member of the Peacocks’ 1,600-meter relay team that set a new school record (3:16.87) and won the school’s first Penn Relays gold medal in over a decade, taking first in the "CTC" heat. The versatile Mayers is the all-time single-season (1,546 yards in 2004) and career (2,612 yards) rushing leader for the Saint Peter’s College football team. In 2004, he ranked second nationally in among NCAA Division I-AA rushers, with 154.6 yards per game.
