Jersey City, NJ (April 1, 2005) — Dr. Julian E. De Lia, Class of 1968, will discuss Intrauterine Placental Surgery: A Pioneer’s Experience on the Frontier of Fetal Therapy at Saint Peter’s College on Thursday, April 7 th at 4 p.m. in the 54 th Annual Mendel Lecture. “We are pleased to have Dr. De Lia who is truly an innovator and leader in the field of medicine,” said Dr. Len Sciorra, The Reverend Joseph E. Schuh Professor of the Health and Natural Sciences at Saint Peter’s College. For the past two decades, Dr. De Lia has focused on the pathophysiology and treatment of Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTSS) in pregnancy. He is currently medical director of the International Institute for the Treatment of Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center in Milwaukee, WI. His colleagues in the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society recently named Dr. De Lia as one of the “four fathers of maternal-fetal surgery.” He developed and performed for the first time in 1988 intrauterine placenta laser surgery for TTTS.
After his studies at Saint Peter’s College, Dr. De Lia earned his doctor of medicine from the College of Medicine of New Jersey in Newark and completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. He has taught medicine at a number of schools and universities, including the University of Utah, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is a fellow in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American College of Surgeons.
The Mendel Lecture is the longest running lecture series in the College’s history and features distinguished speakers in Science. This year’s event is cosponsored by the Biology Department and the Mendel Biology Society, a student-run organization, and will take place in the Pope Lecture Hall on the Jersey City campus.
