Jersey City — Saint Peter’s College will dedicate the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.-Kairos House on Wednesday, October 4 at noon. Daniel J. Berrigan, S.J., founder of the Kairos Peace community and author of more than 70 books on nonviolence, will celebrate the Mass. The Social Justice House, located at 125 Glenwood Avenue, honors both Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who received an Honorary Degree from Saint Peter’s in 1965, and the Kairos Peace community founded by Father Berrigan.

"The Social Justice House provides a central place on campus for our students and the community-at-large to research, to discuss and to engage in the peace movement and nonviolent resolution of conflicts worldwide," said Dr. Anna Brown, Director of the Social Justice program at Saint Peter’s College and Professor in the Political Science Department. "Our work will reflect the spirit of these two individuals who devoted their lives to promoting peace and justice."
Father Berrigan entered the Society of Jesus in 1939 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1952. He has taught and lectured at numerous universities and received the Lamont Poetry Award in 1957 for his work Without Number. He and his late brother, Father Philip Berrigan, participated in numerous protests of the Vietnam War and other causes.
The Social Justice House contains archives donated by the Kairos community, including works in philosophy, literature and on the history of nonviolence and Civil Rights movements, including many of Father Dan Berrigan’s works. The archives also include sound recordings and various works of art.
Saint Peter’s College is the Jesuit College of New Jersey. Founded in 1872, Saint Peter’s has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The main campus is located in Jersey City. The College has a branch campus for adults in Englewood Cliffs, NJ and also offers courses at various corporate sites at the Jersey City waterfront and in South Amboy, NJ.
