Saint Peter’s College Art Gallery Showcases

Jersey City, NJ – Saint Peter’s College will open its annual art exhibition on April 17, 2009. Featuring nearly fifty pieces, “A Room with a View” celebrates natural landscapes from throughout the world.  Ranging from the 17th century to present day, the works will be displayed in Saint Peter’s Art Gallery on the Jersey City campus through May 2, 2009.

An array of mixed media – oils, drawings, marble, bronze, terra cotta and photography – the works were created by noted artists, such as, Louis Dupre, Robert Bliss, John Lear, Babette Martino, Enzelino Briante, Paul Flandrin and William Lathrop.  This exhibition was curated by Gallery Founder and Director Oscar Magnan, S.J.

“I wanted to provide the opportunity for the college and local communities to experience things they would not see otherwise,” noted Fr. Magnan.  An artist himself, whose works are in the permanent collections of distinguished museums, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution and the Guggenheim, Fr. Magnan is a professor of fine arts at Saint Peter’s College.

There have been a variety of exhibition themes since the Gallery’s opening in 1976, including abstract art, Oriental art, Orthodox religious art and portraits from the second century onwards.  Fr. Magnan credits collectors for donating their pieces, as well as Jesuits, students and friends for the success of the Gallery.

Located in the O’Toole Library, the Gallery will be open to the public on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  and on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.  Admission is free.
