Jersey City, N.J. – The Saint Peter’s College Department of Applied Science and Technology received a $150,000 grant from the United States Department of Defense to support the College’s purchase of state-of-the-art research equipment to further the study of microplasma.
The grants were awarded through the Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP), which requested proposals from college and university researchers studying technical and scientific areas of interest to the Department of Defense. Saint Peter’s received one of 166 awards given by DURIP to 96 institutions of higher education, from a pool of 840 applicants. The College was one of four institutions of higher education in New Jersey to receive the DURIP grant; the others include Princeton University, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) and Stevens Institute of Technology.
“The DURIP grant is a very competitive and prestigious award. Obtaining funding of this type further defines the science work and research at Saint Peter’s as cutting-edge,” said College President Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D.
DURIP enables higher education researchers, scientists and engineers to purchase scientific equipment costing $50,000 or more to conduct scientific research in areas that are relevant to national defense practices. The awards are the result of a merit competition for DURIP funding conducted by the Army Research Office, Office of Naval Research, and Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
Saint Peter’s is home to the Center of Microplasma Science and Technology (CMST), a national center for excellence. The CMST serves as the nation’s first and only scientific and educational center devoted entirely to the emerging field of microplasma research in the United States.
