Jersey City, N.J. – On Monday, February 28, 2011, Rev. T. Patrick Lynch, S.J., passed away at the Jesuit retirement community, Murray-Weigel Hall, at Fordham University, at the age of 80.
Fr. Lynch served as a professor of English literature at Saint Peter’s College from 1974 to 2006. He also served as the assistant director of admissions from 1988 to 1989 and president of the faculty senate from 1992 to 1994. On August 3, 1994, he received the Bene Merenti award, a distinction awarded to employees with more than 20 years of service to the College.
“Fr. Lynch was a beloved member of the College community and a true friend to so many of us,” said Eugene Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s College. “We have many memories of the professional and personal contributions that he made during his years here.”
Fr. Lynch, born in Brooklyn, N.Y. on August 19, 1930, joined the Society of Jesus on July 30, 1948 at St. Andrew-on-Hudson in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 17, 1961.
Fr. Lynch graduated from Woodstock College, a Jesuit seminary located in Baltimore, in 1962 and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1969.
He spent many years in the Philippines, where he taught Latin and religion at the San Jose Seminary. Fr. Lynch was a lecturer in theology, philosophy and English at Ateneo de Davao, where he also served as the president of the English division. Additionally, he was an English literature teacher at Ateneo de Manila University.
Father Lynch is survived by his brother, Fr. Edward Lynch, S.J., and his sister, Sr. Barbara Lynch, S.S.J.
The wake for Fr. Lynch will be held on Wednesday, March 2 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Saint Peter Hall Chapel on the Jersey City campus of Saint Peter’s College and from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Fordham University’s Murray-Weigel Hall Chapel, located in the Bronx, N.Y. The funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, March 3 at 11:30 a.m. at Murray-Weigel Hall Chapel. A memorial Mass for Fr. Lynch will also be held at Saint Peter’s College at a future date.
