Each semester Saint Peter’s College invites senior executives and professionals to campus to address M.B.A. students. This one-week Executive in Residence (EiR) program enables students and executives to network and share ideas about managing risk. Topics may include:
• Most important risks facing modern organizations
• Mechanisms to integrate the management of risk across the enterprise
• Dealing with governance and regulatory risks
• Risks from global warming and environmental issues
• External risks on the horizon
• Internal exposures posed by culture, leadership gaps, and management practices
This semester’s program is taking place the week of March 5. Below are the executives that are participating.
Thomas J. Whalen, Esq. ’60 is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott LLC. He has had extensive litigation experience at both the trial and appellate levels, recently presenting oral argument in November 2011 before the United States Supreme Court in the deportation/immigration case captioned Kawashima v Holder. Whalen also successfully argued the case of Helicopteros Nacionales de Colombia SA (Helicol) v Hall, 466 US 408 (1984) before the Supreme Court. The Helicol case is the landmark precedent on the issue of the jurisdiction on U.S. courts over claims that arise outside of the United States.
Whalen previously served as law secretary to the Honorable Gerald McLaughlin of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. A frequent lecturer on aviation law issues, he was selected in 2010 and 2011 for entry in “Guide to the World’s Leading Aviation Lawyers” by Euromoney Legal Media Group and in “Who’s Who Legal” Aviation by Law Business Research Ltd., London, England in cooperation with the International Bar Association.
Whalen served in the U.S. Army for three years as an officer including one year as U.S. Army Customs Officer at the commercial port of Saigon, Vietnam. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Saint Peter’s College and is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center.
James T. Leman ’68 is a managing director and advisor at Westwater Corp, a management and technology consulting firm. He is currently consulting after having spent years leading global electronic trading and external connectivity, global operations management and regulatory groups at Citigroup, HSBC and the New York Stock Exchange and their affiliates. Leman also served as the president of SunGard BRASS. He has in-depth skills in financial and operational aspects of the brokerage industry, and continues to work with the creation of innovative technologies and standards for trading and managing the processing of securities transactions.
Recognized as one of the top technology innovators of the ‘90s by Wall Street & Technology magazine, Leman is a founding member of the FIX (Financial Information Exchange) Industry committee and he led the global creation of the FIX committee in Europe, Japan, and Asia. Leman was also a founding member of Thompson/DTCC Omgeo (U.S.) Advisory committee.
He holds a B.S. in accounting from Saint Peter’s College and an M.B.A. in finance from Fordham University.
Thomas R. Borgers ’75 has more than 30 years of experience working within the financial/mortgage industry, the Federal Government and various consulting firms. He is a former senior investigator of the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (FCIC) and contributor to The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report. He has performed and developed advisory services for numerous global financial services institutions, including hedge funds, mortgage lenders, credit card and insurance companies.
Borgers has directed major global financial institution’s private banking division’s mortgage lending programs. He has been the Federal Investigator-in-Charge of some of the most sensitive and complex investigations in the country, serving as the Senior Certified Fraud Examiner, financial analyst and consultant for some of the largest fraud and negligence cases, including billion dollar bankruptcies, securities violations and market manipulation, white collar crimes, asset backed securities and other specialized consulting assignments.
Borgers holds a bachelor’s degree from Saint Peter’s College.
Mary K. Whelan ’71 is president of eMarkets Group, LLC, a marketing and sales company. She has also served as a senior executive of BioElectronics since April 2002.
Previously, Whelan was the founder and CEO of Revalent Media, Inc., a mobile coupon marketing start-up. Prior to that, she served as an executive vice president at mPhase Technologies, an IPTV software and nanotechnology company. She also worked for more than 20 years at AT&T Corp., Lucent Technologies, Inc. and Bell Labs. As Lucent’s Vice President – Strategic Communications and Market Operations, Whelan was responsible for Lucent Technologies’ global marketing operations, including marketing communications and customer programs, and for the global sales support environment for the worldwide sales force.
