The Saint Peter’s University National Model United Nations (NMUN) team participated for the second time in the National MUN Conference, this time hosted as a virtual three-day conference. The team thrived and thoroughly enjoyed competing with students from universities across the United States and around the world.
The NMUN is the world’s largest university-level Model UN. It brings together participants annually representing more than 130 UN Member States to discuss contemporary global issues, and it allows students to develop skills in diplomacy, critical thinking, problem-solving, public speaking, writing and research. Throughout the fall semester, the Saint Peter’s MUN team held several delegate training sessions and practiced weekly. This year, the team was honored to be selected to represent the Russian Federation at the conference– an assignment conference organizers typically reserve for more experienced teams. Saint Peter’s MUN Secretary General Gineen Abuali ’21 said “it was a challenging and rewarding opportunity for our students to learn and understand the complex international geopolitical conflicts and national issues of the Russian Federation.”
The Saint Peter’s delegation competed in the three-day virtual conference from November 6-8, with several sessions spent working on resolution papers and debating with other delegates about proposed solutions to resolve or mitigate international concerns. The delegates were:
Jamie Suarez ’23
Gineen Abuali ’21
Jili Zhu ’21
Oshane Annon ’22
Hursith Adimulam ’21
Jacob Adelhoch ’21
Linda Akele ’23
M. Moueed Haider Mirza ’23, Saint Peter’s Head Delegate
The team had a great experience being part of different committees and working with other delegations. Hursith Adimulam ’21 was a delegate in the NMUN General Assembly 2nd Committee. “The best part of the conference was when my committee group got both of our working papers through and made them into resolutions,” Adimulam stated. “There weren’t any challenges for our team.”
